Song of the Day = Coming of Age by Foster The People

I’m excited to see what their second record will bring. The lyrics for this song just “get” me, or rather they’re describing someone I know…¬†

Well, I see you standing there like a rabid dog
And you got those crying eyes
Makes me wanna surrender and wrap you in my arms
You know I try to live without regrets
I’m always moving forward and not looking back
But I tend to leave a trail of debt while I’m moving ahead
And so I’m stepping away

(Ahhhh…)

'Cause I got nothing to say

Feels like, feels like it’s coming
It feels like, feels like I’m coming of age
Feels like, feels like it’s coming
It feels like, feels like I’m coming of age

And when my fear pulls me out to sea
And the stars are hidden by my pride and my enemies
I seem to hurt the people that care the most
Just like an animal I protect my pride
When I’m too bruised to fight
And even when I’m wrong I tend to think I’m right

Well I’m bored at game
And too tired to rage

Feels like, feels like it’s coming
It feels like, feels like I’m of coming of age
Feels like, feels like it’s coming
It feels like, feels like I’m of coming of age

Feels like, feels like it’s coming
It feels like, feels like I’m of coming of age
Feels like, feels like it’s coming
It feels like, feels like I’m of coming of age

[Piano]

Feels like, feels like I’m of coming of age
Feels like, feels like it’s coming
It feels like, feels like I’m of coming of age
Feels like, feels like it’s coming
It feels like, feels like I’m of coming of age
Feels like, feels like it’s coming
It feels like, feels like I’m of coming of age

A Playlist For Dad

Since my sister and I are so far away from Dad on Father’s Day, we felt like a phone call wasn’t quite enough, so we started thinking of songs that will always be “pure dad” to us. I know that whenever I hear these, I’ll think of dad. Hope he enjoys this playlist as much as we enjoyed figuring it out.

1. Sweet Cream Ladies - The Box Tops

Dad love the Box Tops, and now, so do I. I have a best of album that I listen to frequently and I always imagine dad blasting this song loudly on repeat several times in a row one Friday night when we were cleaning up the house.

2. Tenderloin - Blue Oyster Cult

Even though Dad worked for them for several years, he actually discovered this was one of his favorite BOC songs when I was in high school. It’s become one of my favorites since then as well.

3. Reasons For Waiting - Jethro Tull

Really all Jethro Tull songs will remind me of dad. And the never-ending frustration I have arguing with him that these records should be filed under “J” instead of “T” and that he especially should know better.

4. In Need - Grand Funk Railroad

I’ve heard this blasting out of my dad’s JBL’s more times than I can count. Another Friday afternoon cleaning favorite.

5. Manhattan Project - Rush

I have no idea if this is his favorite Rush song, but I know it’s one of mine and we’ve listened to this album numerous times while cooking dinner and I’ll forever have the memory of dad taking me to see them and letting me meet the guys before the show. It was the Omni in 1989ish and I was a little shy 8 year girl that had a huge crush on Geddy Lee and I thought my dad was the coolest guy ever on that day!

6. Flying North - Thomas Dolby

Pretty much all Thomas Dolby songs will remind me of dad, but this one always grabs my attention more than most.

7. Drive - The Cars

Dad had a mix tape with this song on it and I remember him playing it a lot when I was a kid.

8. The Big Heat - Stan Ridgeway

I would ask dad to play this song over and over and over again. He even taught me how to cue up the tape player so I could play it myself whenever I wanted. I swear I couldn’t have been more than 5 or 6.

9. Flowing - 311

When I was in college and the whole Napster/Audiogalaxy thing was taking off, dad asked me to download this song for him and I remember hearing it repeatedly at maximum volume the following summer. It’s still one of the only 311 songs that I can say that I like.

10. Indian Red

After getting obsessed with Treme, Dad also got obsessed with the history of the Mardi Gras Indians and their songs. He ordered an album of these songs and spent several months playing them and planning a Mardi Gras costume. Katie and I teased him that we’d have to deck out a hoverchair for him too if he ever actually wanted to march…

11. Warrant - Foster The People

One of Dad’s most recent obsessions. I have to admit, it sounds damn good coming out of his stereo at maximum volume. I really do love him and those JBL’s.
